Dr. Patrick Johnston was born in 1970 in Greenville, South Carolina where his parents were studying to be medical missionaries. His father was a Registered Nurse and his mother a Licensed Practical Nurse and he was the oldest of five boys. He was raised in very poor conditions.
He graduated from Nease High School in St. Augustine, Florida, in 1989 with a GPA of 4.0. Patrick worked his way through undergrad at the Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida and was employed as a phlebotomist at the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. He graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Biology from the Florida State University in 1993 and received the McAllister Award for educational excellence in the biological sciences.
He met his lovely wife, Elizabeth, at the Restoration Church in Tallahassee, Florida, where they led music together and worked together in the creation of the Tallahassee Area Church News magazine. Elizabeth graduated magna cum laude from F.S.U. in 2000 with an elementary education major and music minor, and they married soon thereafter.
Patrick attended medical school at the Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine and graduated in 1998. He came to Ohio University for his residency in family practice, and was chief resident his final year. In spite of a 70 to 80-hour work-week as chief resident, he worked part-time during his residency at a medical clinic for indigents. Upon graduating from residency, he practiced family medicine at the Zanesville Family Practice with Dr. Kris Sandlund from 2001 to 2003. In 2003 he moved to Dresden where he cares for approximately 5,000 patients.
Patrick has lectured at many events, churches, and public debates over the past decade. With the invaluable help of his talented wife and many volunteers, he led the Passion for Life musical benefit which has drawn an audience of approximately 1,100 each year and which has raised approximately $18,000 for the Heartbeats Pregnancy Distress Center in Zanesville.
During the past several years, Dr. Johnston has founded several ministries and organizations. He founded the Association of Pro-Life Physicians, which is committed to discovering which physicians hold to the Hippocratic ethic when caring for unborn human lives, and then educating the public about those physicians who will not commit abortions nor refer their patients for abortions (www.ProLifePhysicians.org). He also co-founded a group committed to lobbying for a statewide abortion ban (www.OhioAbortionBan.com). Dr. Johnston is a member of the American Academy of Family Practitioners, the American Osteopathic Association, Ohions for Concealed Carry, and the National Rifle Association.
Dr. Johnston’s political ambitions were birthed out of a commitment to restore our nation to biblical principles. Four years ago, when the Republican-dominated House and Senate and Republican governor faced a budget deficit, they decided to pass the largest tax increase in Ohio history. Infuriated by the betrayal, Patrick began to consider running for office. He testified before the Health Committee of the Ohio House of Representatives on behalf of “Issue 1” and has testified to the Ohio and Montana state legislatures on behalf of legislation to ban abortion statewide, as well as legislation designed to protect the right of physicians and pharmacists to refuse to prescribe abortifacient drugs. When he saw the effort to ban abortion in Ohio sabotaged in part by Republicans in the House who called themselves “pro-life”, he decided that he would run for State Representative.
If Patrick is elected as the next State Representative of Ohio’s 94th District (which includes Coshocton and Muskingum Counties), he is committed to:
